Internet, Meet Zelda

I figured it’s about time to introduce you to a very important family member—Zelda, the greyhound.

A rescue originally from Florida, Zelda was a subpar race dog in her previous life.  She was so bad, in fact, that her racing name was “Call Me Stupid.”  Hey, maybe she didn’t want to chase a rabbit around a track day after day.

Anyway, after two long years of racing—or, more accurately, losing—it was time for Zelda to retire and become a pet.

We’re a dog family—we had a Brittany named Molly and a Bernese mountain dog named Mandy—so two years ago, when we were in the market for a new pet, getting another doggie was a no-brainer.  This time around, we wanted a quiet, low-maintenance family dog (not an energetic Brittany or a big “Berner”).  After filling out paperwork and passing an at-home interview, we welcomed Zelda home.

And now, Zellie will celebrate her fifth birthday in September.

Mid-Morning Snack

Before running errands, I had a few celery sticks and avocado hummus.

Lunch

Today’s midday meal looked very similar to yesterday’s dinner.

I heated up leftover chicken and peppers from the kabobs and mixed in some spinach.

Snack

A few hours later, I had a Chobani yogurt with a sprinkle of homemade granola.

Dinner

Another day, another dinner on the grill.  Tonight we had Sweet and Spicy Citrus Tilapia and Tofu, grilled asparagus, and roasted eggplant.  Delicious and nutritious!

Rain, Rain, Go Away

Hi!  It’s one wet Tuesday around here, folks.  So wet in fact, I almost called off this morning’s speed workout.  Although it was tempting to silence my alarm and retreat under the covers, I reminded myself that no one has ever died running in the rain (right?); I put on my big-girl pants—er, shorts—had a glass of water and half a banana, and headed out the door.

Workout

I jogged over to the high school track (about 0.8 mi.), stretched out, and began my speedwork sets.  I completed 4x400m (sprint the curves, jog the straightaways), and in between the repeats, I did walking lunges and body-weight squats.  The rain, coupled with the wind and wet track, made these laps pretty challenging.  After the 400’s, I finished off with 2x200m to practice my finishing kick.  I was soaked to the bone by the end, and my white tank top was completely see-through.  Whoops.  A cool-down jog home followed, plus some quick upper-body work with free weights and ab exercises.  Running in the rain—love it or hate it?  I swear, between the weather today and the forecast during Sunday’s Nate Race, rain seems to seek me out!

Breakfast

Surprisingly, I wasn’t craving a hot breakfast after my wet workout.  After drinking two cups of coffee and catching up on emails, I made a bowl of cereal.

In the mix:

-1/2 cup Fiber One Honey Clusters

-1/2 cup Kashi GOLEAN

-leftover pre-workout banana (about half)

Here’s a look at yesterday’s main meals.

Lunch

My mom and I ran errands all morning, and even though I ate a banana around 12:30 p.m., I was starving by the time we arrived home at 2:30 p.m.

While this turkey, cheese, and spinach panini cooked, I snacked on some grapes and carrot sticks to take the edge off.  Instead of using condiments or dressing in my sandwiches, I love spreading hummus on the inside; it’s more flavorful and packs more protein and heart-healthy fats.

Dinner

Summer signifies grilling weather, and that’s what we did for last night’s dinner.  We bought one lamb and three chicken kabobs at Wegmeans yesterday, and my mom also made tofu kabobs.

I enjoyed a tofu kabob and half of a chicken kabob.

And right now, it is still raining!  Yuck!  During raining weather, all I want to do is cuddle up with a mug of tea and read a book, but there are more errands on the to-do list today.  What are your favorite rainy weather activities?
