My Arms Might Fall Off, Part Two

TGIF, everyone!  I’m so happy it’s Friday—the week has seemed so long.  Anyway, thanks for your feedback on yesterday’s post regarding my unexpected bib shorts.  Since you raved about them, I’ve decided to give them a shot.  Can’t knock it until I try it, right?

And speaking of trying things, I finally tested a pair of Newton sneakers!


Yet another reason I love working at JackRabbit:  Employees are highly encouraged to try on each pair of sneakers available for sale.  In fact, we can wear these new shoes during our shifts—and change pairs however often we want! (We do clean them, obviously, before the sneakers go back in the box.)


During my shift last night, I rocked the Newton Gravity, a lightweight, neutral shoe designed for everyday running. (I sound somewhat legit, right?  Ha!) Even though I was working the floor, I didn’t get a chance to hop on a treadmill and truly run in them.  Next time, hopefully!

Workout – Swimming

The good news:  I survived this morning’s Full Throttle Endurance workout in the official fast lane.  The bad news:  My arms might fall off due to pulling for 1,350 yards, some of which included paddles, aka the new bane of my existence.  Before my upper body went down for the count, Andrew introduced a new-to-me-drill:  underwater swimming with fins.

Thankfully, we only had to swim 25 per set instead of 50 like the champ in this video.


As I wrote yesterday, overnight oats have been the name of the game lately.


This mix included one mashed banana, frozen strawberries and blueberries, plus plain Greek yogurt, old-fashioned oats, chia seeds, almond milk, and some cinnamon—and a heaping spoonful of almond butter.  It totally hit the spot.

After breakfast, I spent the morning doing some online JackRabbit training.  Although I have a solid amount of background knowledge in some areas—like all things triathlon, plus cycling, nutrition, and yoga basics—I can already tell talking about electronics and doing shoe fittings will be the most challenging.  Granted, the shoe fittings won’t happen for a while, but there’s so much I need to learn in terms of shoe sizing and anatomy, plus the nitty-gritty mechanics of running and gait analysis.  My head is totally spinning with all this new information, but in a good way.


I’m saving the last of this week’s batch of spicy black bean quinoa for dinner at JRab tonight, so I made a turkey wrap with spicy mustard, spinach, and pepperjack cheese.


Plus a ton of unpictured carrots.

  1. a) If I had a pool like that I might upgrade from doggy paddling and b) I’d have to work on breathing right before holding my breath that long c) that’ll be a great exercise for you that’ll only help you get more AG awards! 😉

    • That drill was so challenging! I made it the full length my first try, but only got about 80 percent of the way the second time. The guy in the video must be super human!

  2. I run in newton neutrals and have been nearly all of my running career. Although I run pretty far on my toes even further from where the lugs are situated, I have found that they have much more support in the toes and less in the heals which works well for my stride. I don’t race them in though. I imagine it would feel really weird to walk around them in all honesty and I def don’t think you could get the full benefit (or maybe any?) from walking around casually.

    • I had mixed feelings about the Newtons–I definitely noticed the toe/arch support, and it felt strange walking around. However, I did jog in place for a few seconds, and they felt good then. Maybe they’ll let me take them for a dreadmill test run one day!

      • You honestly cannot base anything from walking around in them. They are a shoe that takes at least 200+ miles to notice the difference I guess. I also know a lot of people who have just jumped into running with them and gotten injured. Typing all of this out, I question why I still run in them.

        • They’re really popular within the tri community (that’s how I first heard of them), and they’re an Ironman sponsor, so I can see why people gravitate toward them–*cough* me *cough.* 😉

          • You know I’ve been running in Newtons (or working on it) – and I probably have about 70 miles on them. I was fine up until I ran in them for one 11mi long run (not fast) and now I can’t wear them at all – I have a ridiculous pain in my sesamoid… Maybe rest will cure it, but it’s definitely something brought on by the shoe. I was fine, then had pain in the N’s… then ran a half marathon in my Asics with little pain, and then this week made it 2 miles in the N’s -in terrible pain. And I guarantee if I put on my Asics – I wont have any trouble. *sigh* Could just be that I increased too quickly, but at the same time -something is off – I’m going to try orthotics, and if that doesn’t help – it may not be the shoe for me even though I’m a pretty neutral runner and don’t heel strike or over pronate too much … I will agree with Hollie – you absolutely can’t tell the benefits/cons of this shoe for you by walking around in them all day – they say to do that to get used to the feel of the lugs, but for the most part walking and running is two totally different birds… I have the orange/green Motions btw.

            And in regards to your post – Man your meals look tasty! And holy balls that is some serious swimming. I’m terrified!

            Wow, sorry to hear about the Newton problems, Beka. It sounds like you made the right decision pulling the plug and going back to Asics. I do need to start looking for a new pair of training sneakers, and even though Newtons seem quite popular, I’m tempted to stay with my Sauconys–they work for me, and if something isn’t broken, then why fix it, right? *Sigh.* #runnerproblems

  3. I’m loving my Brooks Ghosts 5 that I just bought about a month ago- They were so comfy I didn’t even have to really break them in! And when I don’t have foot pain with all my issues that is a plus too 🙂 I’m so glad you are giving the bibs a try I promise they aren’t weird I thought they would be too, but I like the waist so much better! and they stay up where I want them, obviously!

    • So we talked about the Brooks on Twitter already, but great shoe! Very comfortable and fashion forward. 🙂 My next ride will be Tuesday most likely, so we’ll see how the bibs do.

  4. I’ve heard good things about Newtons! Also Hokas. Both are intriguing, but after finding some shoes that work for me, I tend to just stick with them. It’s so nice that you can try them out in the store!

    • I’m the same way. Sauconys have been working really well, so I’m hesistant to switch; if it isn’t broke, then don’t fix it, right?

    • I’m obsessed with neon! The most recent pair of running shorts I bought are neon–for visibility reasons, of course. 😉

    One of our friends works at Fleet Feet and she has a million shoes, about 20 pairs, and she also gets to try out all of these shoes. I’m slightly jealous!

  7. Love, love, love Sauconys. I actually need to get a new pair soon, although I’m hoping the sneaker fairy visits soon so I don’t have to buy them. 😉

  8. I have used the Newton shoes for some time and find they suit me very well.
    Although I don’t race I do find then very supportive over short to medium distances. Your recovery diet is really good. I use a lot of yoghurt and probiotics as I find this helps my digestion after exercise.

  9. While exploring for fitness sneakers, I have yet to come across the Newtons! They look super comfortable and supportive. I will have to try it out! Your breakfast and lunch pictures look very tasty, especially the oats. It looks like you really spiced it up!

    • Newtons are really big in the triathlon community–that’s how I first heard of them. If you try them, let me know how they turn out!
