Foodie Friday – Smorgasburg and Madison Square Eats

Happy Friday, friends!  We made it to the weekend!

Along with the MuckFest MS Mud Run card my aunt and uncle sent yesterday, they also passed along a CD of race photos.  I love this one!

Since the blog has lacked food photos lately, I thought I’d share a few noteworthy eats from the past week, starting with Sunday’s trip to Smorgasburg in Brooklyn.

It’s highly possible the maple bacon on a stick happened.  And it may have been absolutely delicious.

Anyway, Sara and I spent the afternoon grazing and hanging out, and I tried South Indian food for the first time.

I ordered a Masala Dosa, which tasted like a rice pancake and packed a nice kick thanks to the spicy potatoes.

And last night, I went to Madison Square Eats with some teammates.

Situated in Madison Square Park near the Flatiron Building, this outdoor market showcases 28 of New York City’s most popular restaurants—think things like Korean BBQ, comfort food, gourmet Mexican street food.

My evening of eating started with a margarita and—wait for it—a lobster BLT from Red Hook Lobster Pound.

Disclaimer:  The margarita came from a different vendor.

Lots of flavors worked together—lobster, bacon, chipotle mustard—and this was easily the best BLT of any kind I’ve had in my entire life.

Rounds two and three included a chipotle pork taco from Calexico and hazelnut and tiramisu gelato from Eataly, and unfortunately, both went undocumented.  Eh, you win some, you lose some.

And on a semi-related note, I spent this morning making my staples:  sweet potatoes wedges and spicy black bean quinoa.

Have a great weekend!

What’s the best thing you’ve eaten recently?

  1. That Muck Run picture is so awesome! Happy faces screaming ‘bring it on mud!’ I totally think I would have given bacon on stick a run for it’s money, too. Bacon….stick….perfect! I don’t eat lobster but that lobster blt looks absolutely delish. My favorite thing I’ve eaten lately? I cheated on paleo this week and got some salted carmel pretzel froyo. Sounds like a bizarre combo but it works! (And I may have topped with a bit of shredded coconut, a drizzle of pb and some brownie chunks. shhhhhsh, don’t tell.)

My friend took a few pictures of me eating the bacon, and I have a feeling those images may come back to haunt me in the form of blackmail. 😉 And the crazy thing is I’m not even a big bacon person, but maple bacon on a stick just sounded *so* good.

And OMG, that froyo combo sounds fabulous! There are a few froyo places near me, and I’m fairly sure one of them has a pretzel-flavored option, which you have now convinced me to try. 🙂

  2. Ah how I miss the city! I just went to a Flicks n’ Foodtrucks event here in downtown Tampa – what fun!

    • carriestevens

Foodtrucks are so much fun! I’ve seen so many stationed in NYC–ones that offer Mexican, Halal, froyo (obviously), coffee and baked goods, you name it. Oh, and there’s also a cupcake truck! 😉

  3. Oh my, that bacon! All of this food looks and sounds amazing. Living in NYC is such a neat opportunity to try all sorts of crazy stuff!

  4. I love Indian food! I don’t think I’ve ever tried South Indian food- it sounds good!

    • carriestevens

Is it bad I didn’t know it existed/there was a difference? During college, my friends and I would go to a local Indian restaurant at least once a month to get our fix. Definitely one of my favorite types of food. 🙂

  5. I had dinner at Eataly in December–loved it!

    • carriestevens

Eataly is amazing! I’ve been there for gelato eating and browsing/shopping, but I’ve never enjoyed a sit-down meal. It’s always crowded and super popular!

  6. Love that pic from muck fest! It’s so cool when you actually get a good picture from a race. And the market in Madison square looks so good! I love an opportunity like that to try different foods from different restaurants

My uncle was a great team photographer–he took a ton of really good pictures! And it’s highly possible I end up at Madison Square Eats for dinner tonight; like I really want another lobster BLT. 🙂

  7. Holla for the weekend 🙂
Ohh the combination of lobster and bacon sounds really good – never thought to pair those two together.

    • carriestevens

Right? Two very savory and flavorful things, and they worked so well together. I really want another for dinner tonight. 🙂

  8. Madison Square Eats looks like so much fun! I’ll have to add that to my NYC To-Do list!

  9. I love that photo of you at MuckFest! It definitely looks like you’re having the time of your life 🙂 Also, any chance you have your spicy black bean quinoa recipe on here? I remember you posted it at some point, and I’d like to make it!

I know I keep saying this over and over, but MuckFest was so much fun! And yes, here’s the link to the recipe: http://fitnessandfrozengrapes.com/2013/01/29/spicy-black-bean-quinoa/.

  11. Oh lawdy, that BLT looks AMAAAAAZING. I have never had a lobster roll, but when I do make it up north – it’s on my must eat list. Great pic from the race 🙂 Could easily be a marketing pic!

    • carriestevens

OMG, I’m already plotting to have the lobster BLT again–like when my mom visits this week. 🙂
