Brooklyn Hijinx, Part Two

On Saturday afternoon, I met up with my friend Gabby for more Brooklyn hijinx. (As a side note, doesn’t “Brooklyn hijix” sound cool?  Manhattan hijinx just doesn’t have the same ring to it.) Katie, our friend from college, came to the city for the weekend, so we got to see her and her mom for a few hours filled with … food!  First, we hit up Brooklyn Cupcake—standard.

Our previous cupcake run occurred at its flagship shop in Williamsburg, but we visited its new location in DUMBO (“down under the Manhattan Bridge overpass”).  The actual mixing, baking, and frosting takes place at the main store, but I will support BK Cupcake anywhere and everywhere it goes.   Anyway, it took me for-ev-er to make a decision, and I eventually choice the Guava con Queso, which is inspired by a traditional Columbian dessert.

Blurry picture due to the rain, but holy yum!  Thanks to the cream cheese, it tasted like fruity cheesecake.  The cake itself was perfectly moist and absolutely delicious.  I also split a chocolate Nutella cupcake with Gabby.

Friends and cupcakes!

For our second stop, we went to Rico’s Tacos in Sunset Park.

I was so thankful to have Gabby there to help me navigate the menu—so many options!

Again, it took me forever to make a selection, and I finally went with the pollo asado taquito—a “pocket-friend” chicken taco.

Rico’s makes their tortillas in-house, which I definitely noticed, and I loved the spicy avocado cream sauce.

It was such a fun—and filling!—afternoon!

If you could create any flavor of cupcake, what would you make?

Snapshot Saturday – The Best Day Ever

Hiya, friends—hope your Saturday is going great so far!  As you know, one of my best friends from college visited yesterday, and we had so much fun! (I used the Twitter hashtag #bestdayever quite frequently.) Here’s a quick look at how Melissa and I said TGIF.

While wandering around Grand Central and waiting for Melissa’s train, I walked into Pylones and immediately noticed these handbags.

Yes, those are chocolate bar purses; yes, they smelled like chocolate.  And yes, I considered buying one.

Once Melissa arrived, we grabbed lunch at Guilty Goose, and then officially kicked off #TheBestDayEver with a trip to Crumbs.  Obviously.

We struggled to select our desserts—not that you can pick a bad cupcake, know what I mean?—and we eventually bought three:  chocolate red velvet (in the back), starlight, and peanut butter cup.

Look at these stars!

Talk about intricately detailed.  We left the cupcakes at my apartment and headed to The Strand, aka the best bookstore in the city.  After flipping through a Downton Abbey book, we poked through the gizmo and gadget areas, and I almost bought this for my grandma.

Ha!  Next, we made a quick pit stop at The City Bakery to try the best hot chocolate in New York City.

Friends, if you visit NYC, you must stop here.  Hands down, this was the best hot chocolate I’ve ever had—rich, creamy, and not too sweet. (It tasted like semi-sweet chocolate, not milk.)

Melissa and I actually split a small (they poured the portion into two cups) and even opted for marshmallows.  Neither one of us love marshmallows, but this tower convinced us to go for it.

If there’s a marshmallow tower, then chances are the sweet fluff tastes incredible.  We decided to further fuel our chocolate highs, so we came back to my apartment, opened a bottle of red wine (more antioxidants!), ate one of the cupcakes, and watched a few episodes of Say Yes to the Dress.  Talk about perfection!  A few hours later, we went to Room Service to meet up with Melissa’s roommate (small world, right?) for drinks.

Some sangria was consumed before we went to Brgr for turkey burgers.  No picture because I inhaled it!

What’s your favorite kind of cupcake?  What’s your favorite way to spend a girls’ night?

Snapshot Saturday – Dec. 8

Happy Saturday!  I hope your weekend is off to a great start!

Last night, I met up with some college friends, and we went to Connolly’s Pub and Restaurant for dinner and drinks.

This Magners was my first cider since studying abroad in London, and it tasted delicious.

My sister Margaret and her boyfriend came to the city to see The Nutcracker, and the stayed the night; we ate breakfast at Cafeteria this morning.

Monterey eggs with black eye peas, avocado, jack cheese, and cherry tomato salsa.  Plus a half-order of pancakes for the table.

FYI, that’s sweet whipped cream, not butter.  We also made a quick pit stop at Crumbs for two cupcakes—red velvet and peanut butter cup.

Penn Station went all-out for the holidays.

Instagrammed—for the #HolidayADay Challenge—of course.

Plans for the rest of the day include relaxing, completing a strength training workout, and biking during the SU game tonight.  Here we go, Orange!
