Write It Down, Do It Up – Week of May 12

“What day is today?”

“Today is Mother’s Day!”

Yes, I’m 23 years old and still make Full House references.  The show is applicable to everything.  Plus, John Stamos.  End of discussion.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mommas out there!

And a little fun from this afternoon’s Smorgasburg visit.

Now it’s time to switch gears and talk workouts.  A bunch of my Full Throttle Endurance teammates and coaches are off biking in Italy this week—yes, really—so there are no official organized team workouts until Wednesday morning.  However, a few of the non-Italy goers made plans to link up, so I’ll be running and biking with teammates Monday and Tuesday.  Here’s this week’s edition of Write It Down, Do It Up!

(If you’re new to WIDDIU, here’s how it works:  Every Sunday evening, I post my workout schedule for the week, and I invite you to do the same.  This way, we can motivate each other and hold ourselves accountable.  Sounds like a win-win, right?)

Monday – a.m. run; a.m. strength train

Tuesday – a.m. bike; a.m. strength train

Wednesday – a.m. brick workout with Full Throttle Endurance (FTE)—indoor cycling and running off the bike

Thursday – a.m. bike; a.m. run

Friday – a.m. swim with FTE

Saturday – a.m. swim with FTE

Sunday – a.m. easy bike or off

How did your workouts go this week?  Did you do anything fun for Mother’s Day?

Write It Down, Do It Up – Week of April 28

Happy Sunday, friends!  Guess who survived—and loved!—her first mud run!

muckfest-ms-mud-run-boston-instagram

Yesterday’s MuckFest MS Mud Run was so much fun!  Our team completed the 5-mile, 20-obstacle course in slightly less than two hours.  What a great day, and we’re already planning to do it again next year.  My uncle took a ton of pictures (as did the race photographers), so I’ll wait for those to include with the recap.

And with this mud run, recovery week officially ended.  This means Full Throttle Endurance workouts will pick up in terms of volume and intensity, which is good because Mighty Montauk is just around the corner—only 40 days away!  Starting this week, I’ll be focusing on getting my butt in the saddle and riding more often.  Even though Friday’s time trial in Central Park went OK, there is a lot of room for improvement.  Luckily, the Escape to the Palisades 5-K takes place Sunday, which means an additional team ride will be built into my schedule.  Here’s what I have on tap for this week’s Write It Down, Do It Up!

(If you’re new to WIDDIU, here’s how it works:  Every Sunday evening, I post my workout schedule for the week, and I invite you to do the same.  This way, we can motivate each other and hold ourselves accountable.  Sounds like a win-win, right?)

Monday – a.m. run with Full Throttle Endurance (FTE); a.m. strength train

Tuesday – a.m. bike with FTE; a.m. strength train

Wednesday – a.m. indoor cycle with FTE; a.m. run off the bike

Thursday – a.m. bike; a.m. run

Friday – a.m. swim with FTE

Saturday – a.m. swim with FTE or off

Sunday – Escape to the Palisades 5-K (plus two bike rides)

What did you do this weekend?  If you raced, how did it go?

Write It Down, Do It Up – Week of April 21

Hiya, friends!  How was your weekend?  My Saturday started with my normal Full Throttle Endurance swim and teammate brunch.

4:20-brunch

Had to Instagram it, of course.

I’d be lying if I said the thought of homemade blueberry pancakes and a cheese, bacon, and asparagus frittata (plus coffee, bacon, and mimosas) didn’t motivate me to hit the water.  That afternoon and evening, I worked at JackRabbit.  And guess who sold her first wetsuit!  Woohoo!  Because I’m going to Boston next weekend for the MuckFest MS mud run, I swapped shifts with a few coworkers, so I’m spending my Sunday at JRab as well.  And I definitely don’t hate it.

On the workout front, the next seven days will be a recovery week, and two of our coaches will host the second indoor triathlon of the season on Saturday (which I’ll miss because of the mud run).  We begin a new training cycle next Monday, so I plan to embrace this step-back week.  Time for Write It Down, Do It Up!

(If you’re new to WIDDIU, here’s how it works:  Every Sunday evening, I post my workout schedule for the week, and I invite you to do the same.  This way, we can motivate each other and hold ourselves accountable.  Sounds like a win-win, right?)

What’s your favorite brunch food?

Write It Down, Do It Up – Week of April 14

Happy Sunday, friends!  Did you have a good weekend?  My Saturday started with a Full Throttle Endurance swim and teammate brunch.  I went prepared!

4:13-brunch

Not sure if bringing a bottle of champagne and jug of OJ to practice constitutes a new high or new low—ha!  Anyway, later that afternoon, I went to JackRabbit for my second day of work.  So far, so good!  I even got to talk to a lady about wetsuits, so I was in trigeek heaven.  Nighttime festivities included a JRab party (did I mention my coworkers are awesome?!) and a trip to Brooklyn to celebrate my friend’s birthday.  Very solid night overall.

In terms of this week’s FTE workouts, we’re picking up the intensity—big time.  After tapering before Nautica South Beach and easing back into training this past week, I’m physically and mentally ready to get back to work:  Only 54 days until Mighty Montauk!  It will also be interesting to see how this week progresses in terms of balancing my hours at the store and training across the disciplines.  My weekly shifts haven’t been nailed down quite yet, but it looks like I’ll be logging mostly afternoon and evening hours.  We’ll see what happens.  Let’s Write It Down, Do It Up!

(If you’re new to WIDDIU, here’s how it works:  Every Sunday evening, I post my workout schedule for the week, and I invite you to do the same.  This way, we can motivate each other and hold ourselves accountable.  Sounds like a win-win, right?)

Happy Easter, friends!

2013-easter-eggs-easter-bread

I hope you get to spend the day with friends, family and loved ones.

My trip home to Syracuse was short and sw-EAT:  yesterday morning, I met up with MB and one of her running buddies (another Ironwoman nonetheless) for an easy 45-minute run before I grabbed breakfast with two of my cousins.  Then, my aunt and I went to Syracuse Bicycle and Fleet Feet to do some MuckFest mud run shopping.  At Syracuse Bicycle, I stocked up on cycling socks, water bottles, and even bought a pair of toe covers and a black Patagonia vest. (Hey, it was on sale.) The shop was recently renovated, and it’s very impressive.  Yesterday afternoon, my family watched the Syracuse-Marquette game, and the Orange won—Final Four, here we come!

We enjoyed a sinfully delicious Easter breakfast this morning before we headed to my aunt and uncle’s house for Easter “dinner”—and then I hopped on a train and am currently en route back to New York City.

So now that it’s officially Sunday, you know what that means:  It’s race week!

nautica-south-beach-triathlon-seven-days

This time next week, I will hopefully have completed my first triathlon of the season—and will be celebrating accordingly with my teammates!  Race week, race week!

As you know, I didn’t blog about my workouts at home, but my final push before the taper went well:  on Friday, I had a solid swim that included a 15-minute time trial.  My wetsuit was quite the topic of conversation, and the old ladies at the local pool loved me! (And some of them knew me when I was little.  Oh, small towns.) That afternoon, I completed the best tempo run I’ve had thus far.  Not only did I hold paces below my designated splits (don’t yell at me, coach!), but I also felt strong mentally.  This was the first tempo run I completed solo this training cycle, and it was a huge confidence builder—I proved to myself that I can push harder and hold a faster pace than I thought possible.  Disclaimer:  The tempo run occurred in the cold (roughly 34 degrees Fahrenheit), which is basically the exact opposite of what Miami’s weather conditions will be like.  Here’s to hoping powering through snow and hail (no joke!) will help me be mentally tough come race day.

And as previously mentioned, I met up with MB and her running buddy on Saturday.  They had 10 miles on the docket, so I tagged along for 45-minutes or slightly more than five miles.  Thanks for a run fun, ladies—and for not dropping me!

Overall, I couldn’t have ended this week on a better note workout-wise, so I will do my best to embrace the taper so I’m locked, loaded, and ready to do work.

How was your Easter?

Write It Down, Do It Up – Week of March 24

How can it be Sunday?  This weekend flew by!  My Saturday started off with my normal Full Throttle Endurance swim session and brunch at my teammate’s apartment, and then one of my teammates and I went shopping for cold-weather cycling gear—and this morning, I rode in Central Park for the first time!

3_24-bike-ride-central-park

Had to post the awkward selfie.  Unpictured are my heavy-duty gloves, Under Armour pants underneath my cycling shorts, and two pairs of socks.  Yes, my toes still froze.

I didn’t crash like my Chinese horoscope predicted, and I didn’t get dropped—woohoo!

After today’s ride (detailed post will go live tomorrow), I feel much better about tackling 19 miles (after a half-mile ocean swim and before a four-mile run) in 13 days.  Yep, less than two weeks until my first race of the season.  This past week, my emotions have been all over the place—excited, nervous, anxious, you name it.  It’s great to know my teammates feel the same way, and we’ve been really good about reeling in each other when someone gets too stressed.  Obviously, we talk about this upcoming race quite a bit, and during the next two weeks, I will make a conscious effort to focus on aspects I can control:  my training, my recovery, and my fueling/nutrition.  Yes, there are things that worry me:  how will I handle the heat and humidity?  Should I buy a sleeveless wetsuit (aka my current obsession concern)?  Do I need to fuel during the run?  There’s something to be said for addressing these thoughts, but constantly thinking about these race-day conditions isn’t productive.  My mantra until the 7th?  Control the controllables.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, friends!  Did you do anything to celebrate?  If spectating the NYC Half counts, then yes!

I love my teammates–congrats to the boys who had great races!

My friend Laura and her roommate Katie visited this weekend for the Tri-Mania Expo, and we had a ton of fun yesterday trigeeking out.

Full-fledged post coming your way tomorrow!

Anyway, t-minus 20 days until South Beach—ahhh!  I can’t believe how quickly it’s approaching.  Andrew sent an updated schedule, which basically prescribes more training hours.  Overall, my teammates and I will be pushing this week and next before we taper for our first race of the season.  Bring.  It.  On.

Happy Sunday!  Did you have a good weekend?  My family visited, and we had so much fun!

jersey-boys-broadway-nyc-family

Doing what we do best—goofing off at Jersey Boys!  I have a picture-heavy post that details this weekend’s activities slated to go live tomorrow, so let’s jump to workouts.

With less than 30 days until South Beach (27, but who’s counting?), it’s time to kick training into high gear—bring on the speed work!  Andrew’s off being a normal person vacationing, so Scott will coach tomorrow’s workout that contains 400m, 600m, and 800m repeats.  Danny will lead Wednesday’s indoor cycling session, and a mystery coach will take us through Friday’s wetsuit-optional swim.  I’m also kicking around some ideas for heat training because Miami’s humidity will be a beast, so any tips from my southern or Florida-based friends would be appreciated.

How did your workouts go this week?  Do you prefer working out when it’s warm or cold outside?

Write It Down, Do It Up – Week of March 3

Hey, hey—happy Sunday!  How was your weekend?  Yesterday, I completed a super-sprint indoor triathlon (500-yard swim, 12-mile bike, and 3-mile run) with some of my Full Throttle Endurance teammates.  It was so much fun, and it went really well!  Recap will go live tomorrow!  Afterward, a few teammates and I grabbed “triathlete brunch” (normal brunch starts at 11 a.m.; triathlete brunch starts at 9 a.m.—ha!).  Even though we see each other regularly at practice, it was nice to hangout without swimming, biking, or running.  We obviously had to celebrate our first “race” of the season, so spiked hot chocolate for all!

post-triathlon-hot-chocolate

I have no regrets.  Last night, I got dinner and frozen yogurt with my friend Sara.  Again, no pictures and no regrets.  Great day overall!

Anyway, recovery week has ended, so it’s back to normal workouts.  As always, these next seven days will be packed, but I’m changing up the order of some sessions:  Andrew invited me to a swimming and running “race” the FTE racing team is having on Thursday:  100-yard swim, 0.25-mile run, 200-yard swim, 0.5-mile run, 300-yard swim, 0.75-mile run, 400-yard swim, 1-mile run, 500-yard swim, 1.25-mile run.  He says it will hurt, and I appreciate his honesty.  Oh, and we also have our second two-mile running time trial tomorrow morning.  And not that I need a reason to get after it this week, but my first official race of the season is basically one month away.

When is your next race?  Do you count down to big events too?

Write It Down, Do It Up – Week of Feb. 10

Hiya—happy Sunday, friends!  How was your weekend?  I found the perfect balance of activity and laziness.  On Saturday morning, I went to the pool and completed the same workout from Friday’s team practice.

2:16-saturday-morning-swim

Recently, swimming has been pushed to the backburner—aside from the team workout on Friday, it’s always my second session of the day, so I’m never 100 percent fresh—so I decided to change my schedule:  looking forward, I plan to swim on Saturdays.

Going to Chelsea Piers yesterday ended my several month-long weekend hiatus from the facility, so I was pleasantly surprised to see three of my teammates working out and getting after it.  Oh, and there was also a masters swim team practicing, and I had to literally pick my jaw up off the flow.  Watching those athletes pulling and kicking so crisply and cutting through the water (not to mention executing perfect flip turns) proved to be a very inspirational and humbling experience.  I hesitate to say that I swim now—basically, I kick and pull (sometimes simultaneously) and float and try to move my body forward.  There’s also definitely something to be said for the training philosophy of swimming with the swimmers, biking with the bikers, and running with the runners.

Yesterday afternoon, I met up with Jen and Abby for a run in Central Park after a terrible commute thanks to subway construction.  It was my fist time meeting Abby, who grew up 15 minutes away from me (small world!), and it was great to see Jen again.  Both are training for half-marathons, so I just tagged along for the run—and completed my first full lap of Central Park, which was long overdue because I’ll have to tackle that course during the NYC Triathlon.  Anyway, Abby stayed with us for a bit (she had her long run scheduled for today), and then Jen and I headed to Riverside Park and the West Side Highway so she could complete her 10 miles.  We had so much fun chatting away—and she totally picked up on my gossip-hound tendencies—and the miles passed so quickly!  I finished with 8.3 for the day, which obviously wasn’t on my training plan (shhh, don’t tell my coach!), but it was such a fun run and totally worth it.

Aside from running errands and prepping food for the week, I took today totally off and spent the afternoon reading Chrissie Wellington’s A Life Without Limits:  A World Champion’s Journey.

a-life-without-limits-chrissie-wellington

I’m almost done, and it’s so good!  It’s also the next read for Jamie’s virtual book club, and since this will probably be my last time participating for a while, I want to write a thorough review.

OK, time to talk workouts.  I completed all but two sessions last week, which is pretty good.  This week’s big event will be an indoor triathlon on Saturday that Andrew briefly mentioned last week:  500-yd. swim, 12-mile bike (on spin bikes), and a three-mile run, so a super-sprint of sorts.  I’ve never done an indoor triathlon, so it will be an exciting training day for sure.

Monday – a.m. run with Full Throttle Endurance (FTE); a.m. swim

Tuesday – a.m. run and strength train

Wednesday – a.m. bike with FTE; a.m. run (plus two fitness events for work)

Thursday – off

Friday – a.m. swim with FTE; a.m. run

Saturday – indoor triathlon or a.m. swim; p.m. bike and strength train

Sunday – off

How did your workouts go this week?  And who’s racing this weekend?!  Have you completed an indoor triathlon?
